Gwendolyn Patricia Carson, Executive Board Director

Retired from the City of Menlo Park after serving 32 years employment in local government.  Her work experience during her early years included working with children in the Burgess Afterschool Program and the Belle Haven Child Development Program.  The majority of her years were spent in the City Manager’s Office, City Clerk’s Office and City Council.

Ms. Carson currently works directly with the children and staff at the Girls’ Club.


Dr. Marion Winters, Vice President

Retired educator. Dr. Winters retired from De Anza College. Professor in the Women’s Studies department for over two decades. She also took the lead in implementing programs in the Office of Diversity. Prior to De Anza, Dr. Winters taught at Los Altos High School for several years.  Dr. Winters is currently very active with other organizations as well as serving on the Girls’ Club Board.

Dr. Winters has a Ph.D.


Robert Hoover

Mr. Hoover is a living legend. He is affectionately known as “Uncle Bob”. He is a longtime community activist and has been active in the community for over 60 years with nonprofit organizations. Mr. Hoover holds a master’s degree in education administration.

Mr. Hoover was awarded the Warren award by Supervisor Slocum, and he is winner of the Jefferson award. He has too many achievements to list and numerous awards. One of his biggest passions is the Junior Golf Program. He is the founder of the program which has served youth for over 30 years.  His program elevated young golfers to play at levels that helped them achieve scholarships to attend college. His work also included Free at Last working along with the late David Lewis on the Prisoner Re-entry Program that served adults re-entering society from Prison.  Mr. Hoover retired from “SWAG” Students Who Achieve Greatness and “Live in Peace”, a partnership. In 2015, Live in Peace was chosen by the County of San Mateo to design and implement a 3-year program that would actively re-engage 80 Sequoia Union High School District’s most academically disengaged students.


Lois Reed

Retired executive who worked for nonprofits such as United Way and Combined Health Appeal. Prior to her work in the nonprofit arena, Lois worked in management for Pac Bell/AT&T for over 30 years.  Ms. Reed is a senior, a grandmother and active community member. She has lived in East Palo Alto for over 80 years.


Estela Guerero

Mrs. Guerrero is a mom and grandmother who has devoted time in helping make Girls’ Club programs successful. Mrs. Guerero worked many years in San Mateo County and Santa Clara County in public service. She cares about the programs and services that are available and provided in the community.  She brings fresh ideas and represents our Hispanic community well.


Dr. Frank J. Omowale Satterwhite

Dr. Satterwhite has been an Advisor and Consultant for the Girls’ Club for over 30 years.  Dr. Satterwhite is an acclaimed community-building specialist with more than 30 years of experience providing technical support and building capacity for social change in communities of color as well as other underserved communities.  He now serves as president of Leadership Incorporated, a nonprofit firm that provides capacity-building services in communities across the nation. His previous experience includes serving on the faculty of Oberlin College where he developed the first African-American studies program and as President of Applied Management and Organizational Services.

Dr. Satterwhite has a Ph.D. from Stanford University, an MA from Southern Illinois University and BA from Howard University.  He has numerous awards for his vast professional and public service, including a Kellogg Foundation National Fellowship, and other awards and community service awards from the National Council of Negro Women, Peninsula Community Foundation and KQED Television.
